The Connection Church GEICO Spoof

Here is a video we did for church a couple of Sundays ago. Let me tell you, it was extreamly hard sitting there with a straight face. With Cole doing his lines…it was crazy! I think I should win a “straight face” award or something.

DR Congo, Africa Mission Trip June 19 - July 4 - Update May 30th

Melanie came home the other day and told me that I got another check for $100 for the mission trip. To the donor, I want to say thank you so much. You are a very special lady!
So, here is an update. I have purchased 4 wireless access points off of eBay. Yeah for eBay! Now I have to get the antennas for these, that is going to cost around $300 - $400, yikes! I have also purchased a used Dell laptop from eBay. Yeah for eBay…again!!! I really need a computer to use while I am there, plus, I am going to leave it there so they can get some good use from it.
I started doing some really heavy thinking last night and realized that the power in DR Congo is 220. The access points that I got are 110. The power supply cannot handle the 220. So now I have to buy some converters….it never ends!!! I found a website that has the converters for around $13 each. If anyone knows where I can get them cheaper, email me.
Magic Jack…this thing is really cool. I wrote a small post about it the other day. It has been working great. So what does the Magic Jack have to do with the mission trip? By the way, the Magic Jack is a VOIP phone service that cost $50 the first year and like $20 each year after. So, what does it have to do with the mission trip? Well, I am going to buy another one and take it with me. I bought cheap telephone from Wal-Mart today, one that does not require external power, to see if it worked on my Magic Jack…it did. That was great news. So I am going to take the phone and Magic Jack with me so the mission team will be able to call back home for free! Including me! My plan is to keep the Magic Jack there this way the communication from DR Congo to the USA is free. Isn’t technology wonderful…isn’t GOD wonderful!!!! I just hope that the government over there isn’t blocking certain Internet traffic, so please be praying that this works. This technology is going to be HUGE for them if it all works. Anyways, that’s all for now.

Once again, God has shown his Glory!!! Check it out.

Happy Mother’s Day!!!

When I was 9 when I moved in with my real dad, Randy Barnes, and his wife, Carol Barnes…my step-mother. You know, I really don’t like using that “tag” step-mother, because she did raise me, even though she was not my biological mother, she played the part and she played that part very well. You see, I came to them from a very, I mean very abusive step-father. So mom and dad went from raising a daughter that was about to start 1st grade to immediately having a 9 year old, not even a month later 10 year old son.  One thing that stuck out was mom and dad’s love for God.  I am not going to say that it was a “Cinderella Story” for me, because it wasn’t.  It was TOUGH for me.

Now that I am older, and a father, I look back at the whole situation.  I put myself into Carol’s shoes and thought of every thing that she went through.  I was not her son, I was my dad’s son that was coming from an abusive home.  Wow!  That must have been an extremely hard decision for them to make, for her to make.  That was a life changing event in their lives.  Not only was it tough for me, it was extremely tough for them as well.  Probably harder on them then it was me.  I was by all means not the perfect kid…come on, I had learned some very bad survival skills from my abusive ways.  But, you know what, I would not change the events that happened.  Could it have been better, sure, but God had a plan for all of us.  I could not imagine how my life would have turned out if it wasn’t for Carol.  She taught me some very good life lessons that I use, some everyday.

Carol, Mother, Mom, Friend….I thank you and Love you more than you will ever know!!!  Happy Mother’s Day!!!

P.S.  Thank you for not being the “evil step-mother”.

DR Congo, Africa Mission Trip June 19 - July 4 - Update May 7th

I just got in an email from the “IT” guy at the seminary in DR Congo. Here is his answers to some of my questions about the list of needed items.

I’ m verry happy to receive your e-mail. Gladly I will provide you with information.
A Computer Room
1. As possible as replace (10 or more) Pentium II and pentium III by pentium IV or equivalent in order to update our Computer Room. - Our demande is, if possible, to replace 10 Pentium II and III computers by pentium IV which will allow us to run more software application.  This one will be  tough.  We will be taking these with us during our travel.  Weight with the airlines is very strict.  If anyone is interested, I would suggest a small form factor, barebones computer system.  Here is a link so you know what I am talking about, this system is $219.99 brand new.  eBay might have them cheaper???:  Shuttle PC System from NewEgg
2. Cable conduit
3. Cooler (1 or 2)
4. DR Inverter/Charger (2 or more)
5. 4 scsi Hard disk for PowerEdge4400 server – Ultra SCSI LVD/SE. 200 GB or more
6. cable UTP cat 5 – We can use Cat 5e, 100MB. If we choose cat 6e it will be good to use gigabit Network interface Card. I would like to get them a box of Cat5e cable.
7. Rj 45 connector – A couple of packages of these would be great.  These are cheap!
8. Cable fiber optique – My idea is to use Multimode fiber cable to the seminary: My office is the backbone. The alternative solution is to use wireless, like you plan to do for everyone at Mulungwishi. Ithink the wireless will be affordable and manageable costwise. So all questions about fiber are out
9. connector for fiber optique –
10. Network tools Kit – 3 - This has been taken care of by The Training Camp!!!!  They donated 5!!!
11. Signal Detector – the signal detector is for testing wheter we are receiving the network signal on the station ( Seminary), say at he clinic.

B. Internet Equipments
1. External wireless access point norm N with signal booster (coverage 2Km) - That is correct . See model on http://www.allwan.fr/wifi/default.htm. That’s a model, you can choose an other
2. Wireless PCI Card – 4 Found these on NewEgg for $16.  Here is a link
3. Switch Ethernet with RJ45 or fiber connector(1 or 2) - If we choose the wireless solution, you can bring the RJ 45 ports Switch.  I would like to get them a 24 port Gig switch, but would be happy with 100Mb.
4. Wireless USB Network Adapter – 4 These range in price, new, from $25 on up.
5. Network card for fiber connector –

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Need Help Finding…

In the past week there have been numerous emails about the computer network infrastructure at the seminary in DR Congo. I have been banging it around in my head about taking my Apple MacBook Pro. The only problem with this is it cost me a lot of money and it would be horrible if anything happened to it, like it getting taken away from me by the border patrol in DR Congo…YIKES!!! So what I am looking for is an older Apple laptop. My budget is $300 - $400. I need a laptop so I can do my mission work. So I am asking that if anyone has an old Apple laptop or know of someone that has one, please let me know. I am also thinking about just leaving the laptop there so they can get the full experience of how AWESOME Apple is, or I just might keep it for future mission trips. Not sure yet, still praying for the whole thing.

Aaron’s Donation to the Mission Trip

There are little things that our kids do that just make us so proud!  The other day Aaron comes up to me and he has 3 pennies in his little hand.  He tells me that his G.G. Pa gave those pennies to him.  He wanted me to have them so I could take them on the mission trip to Africa and give the pennies to the African people.  How awesome is that!  God is great!!!!!

Blogs that you have to check out!

I just got a comment on the WordJunkies.org blog that I did.  Oh, and if you have not checked out that blog…you got to.  These poems are awesome.  So, Sandi made a comment on that blog and left her blog web address.  So I went and visited her site….AWESOME!!!  I cannot say enough about the Floria family.  If there was a vote for “family of the year”, it would be them!  Another blog you should check out is Kamala’s World.  This ladies is so remarkable, just by looking at her you know that God is in her heart and He is doing some really remarkable things in her life.  Go check their blogs out.  The links are in my “Awesome Blog Links” to the left of my blog page.

Report Card Day….YIKES!!!!

Remember when you were a kid and report card day came?  I was so scared!  I did good in school, I stress good and not great.  I really didn’t put out the effort.  I did enough to get good grades.  I hardly ever did my home work.  I never study for test.  School was so boring to me.  There was one teacher that actually got my attention and made learning fun.  Mr. Sam Nichols, he was my science teacher through all three years in high school.  If I could go back in time and do school all over again, I would have put forth the effort and instead of doing enough to get good grades, I would have worked hard to get great grades.  Any student that is reading this, I know school is awful sometimes, but it will not last forever.  Do good in school, because if you do, there WILL be more opportunities out in the “real” world for you.

Anyways, the kids came home with their report cards.  What a wonderful day!  All A’s from both of them.  I know that they worked hard to get those grades, too.  I know because I am there when they get home and I make sure they do their home work…the right way.  They did so good and I am so proud of them!  Parents, a word to the wise, be involved with your kids school work.  Show them that you care about what they are doing.  Even though they might not show you respect for it now, they will at some point.

If you haven’t told your kids that  you love them today, give them a big hug and tell them that you love them!

God Bless Your Day!!!

DR Congo, Africa Mission Trip June 19 - July 4 - Update April 9th

Once again God shows us how amazing he is. I just got another email from PayPal with a $50 donation towards the mission trip. I cannot thank you guys for the support and the prayers….you guys ROCK!!!!! I am so excited about the trip. I am going to Hobbs, NM next Friday for a team meeting. I will be able to meet all the people that will be going on this mission trip. I am really excited to get to know them. Most of them I already know. I grew up in Hobbs so I am familiar with who they are. The thing that is going to be awesome is they will get to know Joe Barnes the “man”…don’t laugh, instead of the little boy they all knew.

One thing I am not looking forward to is the Malaria pills. I’ve been told that most people get a little sick when they take them. Yesterday I had to fill out all the documents for the trip. One of the hardest forms to fill out was the Notification of Death. When I saw that, this whole trip became a reality.
